Welcome to my Dee Jay tech journal, an ever-growing archive of tips, strats, hacks and tactics that I have developed over a decade-plus of playing this character in USF4 (long after most other players had already abandoned him). Keep in mind these journal entries are based on my personal experience with the game and may not gel with your own. In other words, your mileage may vary. This journal is not meant as the final statement on all things Dee Jay; rather, it is meant as a starting point for your own Dee Jay explorations and (with a little luck) to help you improve your own success with the character.
1) I often switch back and forth between old and new button names in these articles, seemingly at random and for no apparent reason. For those who may get confused, here is how they match up to one another . . .
- Jab = Light Punch
- Strong = Medium Punch
- Fierce = Heavy/Hard Punch
- Short = Light Kick
- Forward = Medium Kick
- Roundhouse = Heavy/Hard Kick
2) I also tend to engage in the same sort of nonsensical naming sins with Dee Jay's special attacks, so here is how to make sense of them as well . . .
- Max Out = Air Slasher
- Dread Kick = Double Rolling Sobat Kick (or "Sobat" for short)
- Jackknife Maximum/Special (or "Jackknife" for short) = Upkicks
- Hyperfist = Machine Gun Punch or Machine Gun Upper
And lastly, I should state that I have been adding sporadically to this tech journal for many years now and assuming that everything in it is accurate and makes sense. I do try to update it when I notice something is not clear (or, worse yet, is completely wrong), but it's still possible that something slips by me. So, if you find a better way of winning with the character, run with it and just grab what you can from my coverage to supplement your winning plan.
Really, I started this journal to keep the complicated details of USF4 Dee Jay's game mechanics straight in my own head (I remain convinced that he is one of the most technical characters in USF4 and that most people missed this because they reflexively believed all the memes and negative hype instead, thereby denying themselves the opportunity to explore his true depth in detail).
After a while, there was so much gathered here, it only made sense to start sharing it with others who could potentially benefit. If you have found your way to this humble site through one of these channels, I hope you come away with something more than when you first arrived . . . and, if nothing else, get to reap the rewards of whatever insights you find here. One can dream. :)
